JESUS CHRIST said, "Come unto Me all you who labor and are heavy
laden and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11: 28).
After recalling for his hearers two dramatic acts of God
disciplining His people, Jesus Christ then said, "...unless you
repent you will all likewise perish" (Luke 13: 35).
Compassionately Christ called and calls His people from the
brink of disaster to the pasture of blessing. There are recorded
several instances where the Lord used pagan nations to
discipline His people. Whatever else Saddam Hussein is, he is
being used to discipline America. That is, he is focusing our
attention on our need for God.
Some years ago, a destructive tornado swept through the town of
Tupelo, Miss. One person there commented the next day, "The Lord
heard a lot of strange voices ... last night."
Saddam, as the tornado, is causing a lot of people to
reestablish their prayer contacts with the Lord. In that sense
he is being used unintentionally to focus our attention on the
Lord. Fine care inevitably needs to be fine-tuned on occasion.
Clocks need to be synchronized.
Instruments of measurement need recalibrating.
Glasses need adjusting.
Likewise, lives and nations need spiritual renewal.
What Saddam Hussein is doing is intended for evil. Let's pray
and respond that the Lord might intend it for our good.
The Christian community in America might well be mirrored in an
experience of ancient Israel. Solomon had just finished the
