JESUS CHRIST lovingly gave Himself for His beloved bride, the
church. He thus became the prototype of how a husband should
relate to his wife.
The role of a husband is one of loving, serving, and giving.
That is revolutionary, yet, it is the role Christ fulfilled
regarding His church.
No egotist can be a good husband. When it is remembered that
egotism is a basic male trait that must perpetually be dealt
with, this characteristic becomes more important. Cemeteries
are full of people who thought the world counldn't get along
without them. Some egotists are so proud of themselves they can
strut sitting down. An egotist plays too big a part in his own
life.
The word "husband" is of Anglo-Saxon origin and means "band of
the house" or "house band." He is intended to be one who holds
things together. A look at the condition of the American home
today would suggest husbands aren't doing a very good job.
The most violent place in America today is the home.
A Louis Harris poll revealed that 10% of the women interviewed
had been physically abused by their husbands in the prior 12
months. Less than 3% had been assaulted outside the home.
Nearly one million child abuse cases are reported annually.
Approximately two million children run away from home annually.
One child expressed the reason in this way: "It is better to be
beaten by a stranger on the street than by someone you care
about at home."
