Mary's Emotional Easter

Purdue recently played two of the more emotional basketball games I've ever watched in the NCAA Basketball Tournament. In the first round of the Sweet 16, they faced Tennessee. When the first half lead reached 18, Christie said, ''It's over. Purdue can't miss!'' I said, ''Honey, don't be over-confident! Tennessee is really good, and it'll get close before it's over.''
Not only was the second half close, Tennessee took the lead! And then Ryan Cline put the team on his back. With the ball in his hands and the shot clock ticking down, time and time he drilled a fade-away three-pointer! Cline ended up scoring a career-high 27 points, and in overtime Purdue beat Tennessee, 99-94!
That put Purdue into the Elite 8, but facing No. 1 seed Virginia. That game started just like the Tennessee game with Purdue scoring 19 points before they missed their first shot. I said, ''Every shot is goin' in! We can't miss!'' Christie never looked at me but she calmly replied, ''Honey, don't be over-confident! It'll get close before it's over!'' I taught her too well, didn't I?
Virginia led for most of the second half before Carsen Edwards literally took the game into his own hands. The junior sharp-shooting guard scored a career-high 42 points, hitting 10-19 three-pointers. The game was played in Louisville, but he was shooting from downtown West Lafayette! During the last four to five minutes of the game we were standing two feet away from our 50'' flatscreen TV, and we were both screaming. I screamed at the referees, and Christie screamed for Purdue! At one point she looked at me and asked, ''What's happening to me? I've become a Purdue fan!''
Who said that the age of miracles is over? Have you ever lost control of your emotions? Have you ever yelled at a referee? Or at the TV? Maybe you're a golf fan? Were you cheering for Tiger last Sunday? Or maybe you have wept watching one of those Hallmark commercials at Christmas ...
