Ask. Seek. Knock. (11 of 12)
Series: Sermon on the Mount
Will McGee
Matthew 7:7-11
When my wife and I began the process of adopting our first child back in 2009, we were initially told that the entire process would take about 7-9 months.
We were so excited about having a child. We were already picking out names. And buying baby clothes, and setting up a nursery. But then 7 months went by. Then 9 months. Then a year. Then another year.
Then, there was a policy up for debate that would have restricted us from international adoptions... Threatened to end our hopes of adoption.
The waiting was painful... There was no guarantee of the adoption being completed... We were scared heartbroken, angry, we were becoming cynical...
During that time, we began to take these words of Jesus, and we would pray them back to God. We would sit on the floor of our empty nursery room, we would say... God... You tell us to be persistent... So, we're going to keep badgering you... Keep asking and keep asking... Seeking... Knocking... Because we know that this is a good prayer... And a good request... And we know that adoption is a good thing. GOD, GIVE US A CHILD!!! We're asking!!! Like you tell us to do!
And in his timing... And his way... He answered our prayers, and gave us our son. But that season of waiting was painful, and we at times, wondered if our prayers were being heard. Or if they would ever be answered.
But in that season of asking and asking... And praying and praying... We felt God's presence in our lives in a profound way.
We joke that God answered our prayers with a sense of humor, because if you know our son... He is the most persistent kid in the world. ''Dad, dad, dad, dad, dad, dad, dad, dad!''
[7] ''Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
Jesus offers for us, in this text... A vision of prayer... The type of relationship God wants with us.
That is what prayer is... It is ...
