The Enduring Way of Jesus (12 of 12)
Series: Sermon on the Mount

Matthew 2:1-12; 7:21-29
We've been studying the Sermon on the Mount for nearly four months now. And today, we come to the end.
One of the primary themes that we have seen develop throughout the Sermon on the Mount is that there are two paths for life. One that makes sense to our minds. Makes sense to the world around us... A path that many people are on... But Jesus says it leads to death.
But there is another path... It doesn't always make sense. It seems upside down...Blessed are the poor in spirit, blessed are those who mourn... Turn the other cheek... Love your enemies... Lay up your treasures in Heaven...But this is way of Jesus... And it leads to life.
In fact, 7x Jesus says, ''You have heard it said... (The wisdom of the world)... But I say to you.''
The sermon on the mount, then, is an invitation from Jesus to follow him on the path to life. The path seems strange... And even costly... But we can trust the one who goes before us and shows us the way.
The story of Christmas... Is not so different from the Sermon on the Mount. It is an invitation to choose your king. You can choose to bow to the kings of the world. Augustus... Herod... Power and Wealth... Or you can bow to an infant child born to poor parents... in a manger in Bethlehem....
What I think both the Sermon on the Mount... And the Christmas story demonstrate to us is this:
There is a wisdom from the world that seems right to us... But if we pursue this path... It always seems to take more than it gives. But there is a wisdom of God... That looks foolish... It looks like we will take everything from us... But if we go down this path, it actually gives us life.
Matthew 2:1-12 - [1] Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, [2] saying, ''Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star ...
