JESUS CHRIST gives dignity and honor to every human role. There
is no office He elevated any more than that of mother. His
exemplary affection shown His mother from the cross reveals the
respect with which all Godly mothers should be regarded.
Mother's Day, like Father's Day, is an emotional day. In seeking
to focus on the ideal, those less than ideal relations come to
mind. Often they torment certain persons.
This day finds some mothers burdened with guilt. They have a
sense of failure. Often this is legitimate. Occasionally it is
felt by a good mother who tried in vain to guide a wayward child
only to find her efforts rebuffed. Perhaps it is this mother who
suffers most.
Proverbs 10:1 notes, "...a foolish son is the heaviness of his
mother."
Some children approach this day with a sense of guilt in that
they have been and are a disappointment to their mothers. They
have turned off their parents and become as unhuggable as a
porcupine.
Many husbands and fathers find the occasion depressing because
they have not been the mate and support system they know they
should have been and perhaps now regret not having been. Perhaps
when their own mother looked to them for encouragement, their
response might have been the equivalent of "eat rocks."
On a day when the virtue of sex is emphasized, many youth have a
sense of shame knowing they have used sex outside marriage in a
way God never intended, even though Hollywood glamorizes it.
