What Do I Do When Someone Is Mean to Me?
Richard Bradley
Romans 12:14-21
That's a very good question. We better be ready to answer this question because eventually someone is going to be mean to us and hurt our feelings. If you've ever had one of those day when it seemed like people were standing in line to do just that you know what I'm talking about.
How do we normally react when someone is mean to us?
1- Our first reaction is usually shock. We can't believe anyone would want to be mean to someone as nice as we are. 2- Our second reaction is normally some sort of venting. We talk to someone - a spouse or a friend - or if that's not enough, we resort to some form of social media - Twitter or Facebook - and tell the whole world how we feel hoping for a few thousand likes. 3- Our third reaction is to start formulating a plan of action for dealing with this assault on our feelings. Unfortunately, the main clause in this plan usually has to do with how to get that person back.
In this passage Paul gives, as believers, a better way to deal with those who are mean to us.
Romans 12:14-21
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion. 17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, ''Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,'' says the Lord. 20 Therefore ''If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.'' 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. NKJV
According to Paul, how should Christians treat those who are mean to them?
