Being a Witness for Jesus
Palitha Jayasooriya
Acts 5:32
(This is a transcript of a sermon preached at the People's Church in Colombo, Sri Lanka).
Today, I would like to share with you on the topic of 'Being a Witness for Jesus.' And to start off, I would like to read a short portion from Acts 5:32, when the apostles were ordered not to speak about the name of Jesus. They were told, 'do not speak in the name of Jesus'. This is what they said in response, ''We are witnesses of these things.''
Who is a witness? I looked up the word in Longman's Dictionary. It says a witness is someone who is present when something happens and they are able to tell it in a court of law. They will testify about what they saw happen or what they know. I don't know if that is the exact legal term for a witness, but that's what the dictionary says. It also says, 'to see or notice something by being present'. When something happens, you notice that something by being present at that time.
So, a witness is someone who has seen and heard. But it doesn't end there. You see it. You hear it. And then you go out and you tell it. That's when you become an actual witness. You go out there and you tell what you have seen and heard. And the Bible tells us that we are called to be witnesses. To see, to hear, experience, and tell.
Today, I would like to share with you five thoughts on being a witness. God expects us to speak about what we have seen and what we have heard; in our own lives, in our own circumstances.
