Psalm 122:1
Here is the question we want to answer today: How can I become a true worshiper?
As many of you know, I gave my heart to Jesus in August of 1983, and have been learning what it means to be a worshiper since that time. Before then, my brother and I played in a 3-piece rock band with another guy. I never took a drum lesson in my life, but could keep a good beat. I knew what it felt like to have a following of people that liked to come out to the bar to hear your band play, and I knew the satisfaction that comes when the band plays well together. But when I gave my heart to Jesus everything changed. Why? Because my heart changed. It wasn't rules and regulations that changed me. It was a response to what was happening inside my heart. I didn't want my life to be about me any longer. It was no longer about what glory I could get out of playing music, my life shifted. It became about Jesus and bringing glory to Him.
For me, part of what that meant was that I no longer wanted to play and sing songs that glorified a party lifestyle, getting drunk, and flying high as a kite on drugs. I am not against all music except worship music, but it is all about the heart. It's about the motive. My wife is professional clarinetist who plays beautiful classical music in a concert band. I am her number one fan! She has a gift that comes from God and it brings glory to God when she plays it because He gave her the talent.
When I came to Christ, Gerri and I became part of a charismatic prayer meeting that met on Tuesday nights at the church and in that meeting we would worship the Lord with all kinds of instruments. I started to strum a guitar on that praise team. I borrowed my dad's old Aria acoustic guitar and followed along. The music pointed me to Jesus as we sang of the wonders of God and His attributes. What a Mighty God we serve. All Hail King Jesus. Blessed Assurance Jesus ...
