JESUS CHRIST was challenged by persons seeking to ensnare Him in
an unresolvable debate. They asked if it were proper to pay
taxes to the government of their day. Jesus took a coin and
showed it to them, asking whose image was on it. Caesars! He
then said, "Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, and unto
God that which is God's." Caesar provided this coin. It is
under his protection. The coin has his image on it. It was
created in his image. In whose image have you been created?
Give to Caesar what was created in his image and to God that
which was created in His image. New life is God's provision and
protection.
He thus taught us we have an obligation to our nation. What do
you owe America? Many foreign nations are delinquent in
repaying loans they have received from America. However, the
greatest debt owed America is not money, it is allegiance. It is
not owed by foreigners, but by her own citizens. We owe it to
America to be the best citizens possible.
G.K. Chesterton once described America as "a nation with the
soul of a church." The acids of secularism have eroded this
soul.
We sing and pray "God bless America." The greatest way you can
bless America is to live out your part of our text: "Blessed is
the nation whose God is the Lord." That includes being Lord
over your citizenship and Master over the stewardship entrusted
to you; that is, let Him be Lord over your sphere of influence.
What is under your influence? Your house, car, job, friends,
food, wardrobe, and entertainment.
