The tearing down of the Berlin wall is an event of historical
proportions many never expected to see. Where was the church
when the wall came tumbling down and hopes went soaring up. Our
secular press has not hinted that there is a church in Eastern
block Communist countries. Reality tells a different story.
In the German Democratic Republic (GDR) religious leaders have
played a key role in events leading up to the history-shaking
events of recent weeks.They have been in the forefront of calls
for freedom of travel, honest and democratic elections,
cessation of police brutality, and the right of local church
self-government.
TV has shown us the streets of Leipzig crowded with protestors.
They haven't told us that in that city St. Nicholas Church has
been the center of the pro-democracy movement.
The secular media hasn't noted that the senior Lutheran
minister, Guenter Krusche, has been a primary voice calling for
reform.
We have not been told that when Egon Krenz took over as new
party head his first televised speech contained an appeal to
"allreligious leaders" acknowledging he "needs and wants their
contribution."
In Czechoslovakia Baptist have offered proposals to the
government officials drafting a new constitution. In Prague a
