The book of 1 Samuel opens up with the interesting story of Elkanah and Hannah, an Ephrathite man and his barren wife. This man was the husband of two wives, Peninnah, the mother of several sons and daughters; and Hannah, the barren wife.
The family would go down to Shiloh annually to do his yearly sacrifices and Elkanah would sacrifice, he would give out portions to Peninnah and her children, but Hannah had no children to receive portions. This proved to be a source of deep contention within the family.
The family was in disarray due to Peninnah gouging Hannah due to her barrenness. On the other hand, Elkanah loved Hannah and treated her as if she was the mother of many children.
The grief of this situation proved to be more than Hannah could take and she was continually weeping, even to the point of not eating. As the family arrived in Shiloh, they went to offer up their sacrifices and Eli the priest thought she was drunk. After talking to her he realized that she was not drunk, but that she was in deep travail of soul and begging God for a male child.
Eli told Hannah that within one year God would grant her wish and give her a male child. It was one thing for Hannah to have such great grief, but even greater for her to have a great God, the mighty God of Israel. Hannah was to be blessed with not just a child, but with a male child, as she had desired.
The baby boy was born, just as the man of God had promised and in turn we find Hannah doing exactly as she had promised. Hannah took the child and raised him up and when he was past the time of being we ...
