Sermon Summary: In this sermon we examine how we show love for God through giving to the church.

INTRODUCTION: Two little kids were in a hospital, lying on stretchers next to each other, outside the operating room. The first kid leaned over and asked, ''What are you in here for?'' The second kid said, ''I'm in her to get my tonsils out and I'm a little nervous.'' The first kid says, ''You have nothing to worry about. I had that done when I was four. They put you to sleep, and when you wake up, they give you lots of Jell-O and ice cream. It's a breeze.'' So, the second kid asked, ''What are YOU in here for?'' The first kid said, ''A circumcision.'' ''Whoa, good luck buddy,'' said the second kid. ''I had that done when I was born. Couldn't walk for a year.''

The topic we're talking about today can be scary and painful. But if you already feel yourself tensing up, let me give you three good reasons to relax and take a deep breath.

First, God doesn't NEED a single penny for your pocket. He never has and never will NEED anything from you.
Secondly, what God WANTS is not our wallet. He wants YOU. Simple as that.

Thirdly, no one is JUDGING you today. I am sensitive to the reality that some of you are at complete peace with your giving, but many of you feel guilty, embarrassed, conflicted, or even prideful about your giving habits.

It's always good to begin with the basics. Two coaching legends were famous for focusing on the fundamentals. Six months before the Green Bay Packers beat the NY Giants 37-0 to win the NFL Championship, Vince Lombardi began the season by holding a pigskin in his right hand and stating, ''Gentleman, this is a football.''

And John Wooden, who coached UCLA to 10 of its 11 NCAA basketball titles, the most in history, was known for beginning the season by teaching his players how to put on their socks and tie their shoes.
