Training the Child
Robert Dawson
Proverbs 22:6
Both of our children have enjoyed building with Legos. You can buy these amazing Lego sets with hundreds and hundreds of pieces to put together. I remember the first one we ever bought when JM was small was close to 1,000 pieces. They came in different shapes, sizes and colors. Everything we needed to build either a jeep, dragster or sports car was in that box, including the instructions.
While that box contained everything, we needed for a good time, it also contained some moments of frustration and mistakes all because of one phrase on the box...assembly required.
God has also provided a gift for many families that contains great joy and blessing, the gift of children. While God's gift brings great joy and blessing it also holds many challenges and frustrations because when it comes to raising children there is some assembly required and along the way there will be missteps and mistakes.
The good news is, God has not left without the resources we need. He is with us. He has given us His Word. He has given us family and a faith family. All of us have a measure of responsibility in raising these little ones, but the primary responsibility of teaching, disciplining, evangelizing and discipling your children belongs to you.
- While your faith family will play a part in this process, if you take advantage of the opportunities offered, we only have them for about 1-2% of their entire childhood.
- When it comes to your children, especially their faith, as Charles Swindoll said, ''Neither the school nor the church can resurrect what the home has put to death.''
God has given the monumental task of leading their children to the parents.
A truth we should always be mindful of is this, our children are not our own.
- First and foremost, they belong to God. They are not merely the biological byproduct of sexual activity, they are precious treasures sovereignly entrusted to us from God on high.
