Psalms 127

127 A Song of Ascents. Of Solomon.

Turn your Bibles to Psalm 127. This morning we're coming near the end of our Psalms of summer series and we're looking at really rich and beautiful Psalm-

I want you to notice 2 things about the psalm title.

It's one of 2 psalms written by solomon the wisest man in the world- who ironically didn't ultimately heed the advice he gives in this Psalm and makes a wreck of his life. SO it's a warning to us.

secondly it's s psalm of ascents.

This is the kind of psalm that would be sung- as Jewish pilgrims were traveling to israel. They would be literally ascending the hill of Jerusalem and singing this song.

but it's not just to celebrate. It was also meant to teach them something.

Think of this. The children of Israel are ascending this holy hill- and as they reach the crest of this hill- the first most obvious thing they would see is the temple mount and the splendor of the temple the Solomon himself built. Even wealthy foreign Kings would be struck with awe at the sight of it.

And people might be tempted to think- look at the glory of this building! Look at the glory and wealth and splendor of Solomon!- And they forget about the God of the temple.

Because ultimately it's just a building- and this psalm reminds us- unless the lord builds the house-those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Sovereign Lord of the universe has his hand in it it all comes to nothing! It would just be a pile of rubble

SO It's a Psalm that gets to the heart of the real motivation for everything we do- and that we might align our purpose wth that of the sovereign God of the universe. Let's read the text-

127 A Song of Ascents. Of Solomon.
1 Unless the Lord builds the house,
those who build it labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the watchman stays awake in vain.
2 It is in vain that you rise up early
and go late t ...
