Mark 10:35-45
We're taking a few weeks to talk about this idea of ''paradox.'' A paradox is something that, when you first encounter at it, it makes no sense. It seems contradictory. But then, when you look closer, you realize that it actually makes sense in a way that you never saw before.
So we've been using the physical example of dropping a pencil into a glass of water. How does the pencil look? Crooked. We all know the pencil is still straight, but our eyes tell us it's crooked. So here's the point: when you take God's perfect truth from heaven, and you pass it down into this imperfect world, and we look at it with our imperfect, human eyes, it sometimes looks crooked. It doesn't make sense to us. And very often, when Jesus taught, that's how people reacted. It seemed illogical, and sometimes offensive. And yet, for those who had ears to hear, they realized that what they were hearing was the purest kind of truth.
So, throughout this series, we've been looking at some of the paradoxical teachings of Jesus:
If you want to find yourself, you have to lose yourself.
If you want to be truly free, you have to enter into slavery.
If you want to be strong, you have to become weak.
If you want to be first, you have to be last.
And today we come to the final paradox: if you want to be truly great-especially as a leader-you have to become a servant. Serving is leading.
So let's jump right into the passage-Mark chapter 10, verses 35 to 45...
35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. ''Teacher,'' they said, ''we want you to do for us whatever we ask.''
36 ''What do you want me to do for you?'' he asked.
37 They replied, ''Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.''
38 ''You don't know what you are asking,'' Jesus said. ''Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?''
