Romans 2:12-29
Intro: Last week we talked about the largest-fastest growing religion in the world-
It's a philosophy that pervades every human heart- because it's our natural inclination- we are born thinking this way.
The largest, fastest growing religion in the world- is moralism- the idea that you are spiritually ok if you observe this list of rules. As long as your try to do your best as a law-abiding respectable citizen, when you die and meet God, you'll be ok- because you were a ''good'' person.
Many churches preach the Gospel of moralism. Says Al Mohler:
''The moralist impulse in the church reduces the Bible to a codebook for human behavior and substitutes moral instruction for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Far too many evangelical pulpits are given over to moralistic messages rather than the preaching of the Gospel.''
This is one of the deepest problems in the church today because it undermines the Gospel itself.
And last week we learned that if you are a religious, moral person- you are just as a lost as the irreligious immoral person- and will face God's judgment- unless you repent.
Because if you're a moralist- you're not trusting in the finished work of Jesus on the cross to save you from the penalty of your sin- you're trusting in your own sense of self-sufficiency and moral superiority.
Now the question is- how can I know if I am a merely religious, moral person rather than someone who is focused on the Gospel? Right- a moralist church member might not look a lot different on the outside-
I want to give you some criteria- so you can evaluate your own heart- is my heart a stony hard moralist heart focused on external performance or do I have genuine heart change?
