Romans 3:27-4:12
How can a man be made right with God?
There is festival in India called the ''Kumbh Mela'' that occurs every twelve years. In 2013 it was recorded as the largest peaceful gathering of people in history. Over 100 million people attended.(1/3 pop of USA).
The festival is held at the mouth of two rivers, the Ganges and Yamuna, and is led by a group of naked religious men who lead the entire processional down to the water.
One hindu book states ''Those who bathe at the conflux of the black and white river... go to heaven.'' Another says, ''The pilgrim who bathes at this place wins absolution for his whole family, and even if he has perpetrated a hundred crimes, he is redeemed the moment he touches the Ganga, whose waters wash away sins.''
At this festival, you'll see countless people shaving every bit of hair off their bodies including their eyebrows, which is then thrown into the water. They believe that for every hair thrown in, they are promised a million years residence in heaven.
Along with this you see the stereotypical ascetics walking on beds of nails and hot coals or broken glass. People take knives and pierce their tongues. Other stare at the sun until they're blind. All of this to appease their pantheon of gods trying to win their favor.
In the middle east- and abroad- there are fundamentalist muslims- who in their jihad- kill others and themselves in the name of Allah- in the hopes to gain paradise.
Some weeks ago at the Reformation dinner we learned of a monk named Martin Luther who, in an attempt to gain God's favor- wrecked his body through constant fasting, self torture, and constant hours of confession and penance.
Your average Joe american thinks- if there is a heaven- I'm sure God would accept me. I'm a good person. I'm a nice neighbor.
These 4 examples are wildly different yet they are all the same-
