It's a joy to open the book of Romans once again and this morning we are going to begin chapter 6. Hopefully you've been reading Romans in your devotions. You've been tracking with us as we study the book in your connect groups- and I hope you're gaining a greater understanding of who God is and who you are.

And as we begin I want to explain little bit about the context as we reach chapter 6. You could say the first 4 chapters are about coming under grace. There's a detailed explanation of human sin and unrighteousness and the means God used to provide salvation for us in the sacrifice of his son- and that we are justified or declared righteous by faith in christ and what he did on the cross. coming under grace- justification

And chapter 5 began a different shift in emphasis. We have already come under grace- we've been justified- and now we are living under grace. or sanctification. This is the theology behind how we grow in Christ and change into his image- and especially in chapters 5 and 8 it speaks of our security in Christ- no one shall separate us from his love.

So again, as you continue reading through romans recognize that Romans 1-4 are about coming under grace (justification) and romans 5-8 are about living under grace (sanctification)- and we'll tell you what the rest of the book is about when we get there!
So let's read chapter 6:1-14

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrec ...
