Good morning! Please turn to Romans 9.

Romans 9 historically has had a very different reception. It is one of the most hotly contested chapters in all the bible- not because it's confusing- but because it's often misunderstood. And quite frankly, people don't want to believe what it teaches.

So Tj and I have the privilege or shepherding you through this- and you'll find that these chapters- are actually incredibly comforting- as we study the mind and purposes of God in his sovereignty.

But before we get into the real depth, we're going to start slowly and set the stage in verses 1-5- and we're going to see the heart of the apostle Paul- and God himself- for his people, Israel.

I am speaking the truth in Christ-I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit- 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. 4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. 5 To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.

There was a congregation who had dismissed their pastor and one of the members was asked what what the reasoning behind this. And he responded,

''The pastor kept telling us we were going to Hell.''

He was then asked ''what does the new pastor say?''

He responded ''He says the same thing! The only difference is this- when the first pastor said we were going to hell, he sounded glad about it. But when our new pastor says it, he sounds like it's breaking his heart''
