Tucked away at the end of our New Testaments are the often-neglected letters of 1, 2, and 3 John. You can spend a lifetime going to church and never study 2 and 3 John. Yet, they deserve your attention for they are rich in truth. While the letters of John are a little book, we remember that big things come in small packages. John attempts to combat false teaching that is rising fast in the church of Ephesus. Those of you with any experience know that false teaching is not just a problem in the past.
Getting the Most Out of This Study
1. Ask Someone to Pray for You
Real spiritual growth happens through both investigation and illumination. Illumination is when the Holy Spirit opens your eyes and reveals to you the meaning of the Scriptures (Psalm 119:18). You can think of illumination like the power of an overhead light illuminating a dark closet. You should pray that the Holy Spirit would give us his illumination so we can best understand the Scripture. You know when illumination happens when you become excited about what you learned in Bible study. Before the second session, I want you to record the name of someone who will commit to pray for your time of study over these next twelve weeks. Ask them to pray that you will grow in spiritual knowledge but also you will grow in putting this knowledge into practice. My Prayer Partner is for the next 12 weeks is: ______________________________
2. Get to Know the People in the Study
Many of you may already have a few friends in the study. Yet, I want to challenge you to get to know at least two new people during this study. Throughout this time of study, you will be given opportunities to meet someone new. Invite them out for a cup of coffee to learn more about them. Invite them over to your home when it is appropriate.
