Luke 9:27-36
We are looking at five biblical portraits of Jesus from Luke's gospel. Luke is one of the four biographies of Jesus. Luke gives us twenty-five percent (if you will) of the entire biography of Jesus. ''Who is Jesus?'' is the question that everyone asks, just as the disciples did in their day.
Albert Schweitzer has described the search for Jesus throughout time as follows: Typically, one has ''created [Jesus] in accordance with one's own character... There is no historical task which so reveals someone's true self as the writing of a Life of Jesus.'' Against this notion, I want to examine the biblical documents themselves to see Jesus as He is.
Who is Jesus? They asked this question when He calmed the winds and seas (though he was woken from a dead sleep) at a moment's notice as a librarian would a group of school children. They asked this question when He forgave sins because everyone knew that only God had the prerogative to forgive sins. And today we examine one of these biblical portraits in what is known the Transfiguration - the climatic event where the answer to the question, ''Who is Jesus?'' is given. Today, we learn that Jesus is Unique.
But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.''
