In Judges 11 we find one of the oddest stories in the bible, which involves one of the noblest men in the bible. The Israelites are once again suffering at the hands of the enemy, which were the Ammonites at this time.
Jephthah was an odd character due to his linage and leadership. He was born as the son of Gilead, though his mother was a harlot. In time Gilead's wife bare him many other sons and they despised Jephthah and kicked him out after mocking him due to the vocation of his mother.
Jephthah went off to the Land of Tob and while there many men of ill repute gathered around him and they became marauders and pillaged the land. The elders of Gilead sought out Jephthah and his men to lead them in overcoming the harassment of the Ammonites.
Jephthah found it humorous that the very men that had ran him off, now sought his help. He refused to help the Israelites unless they made him leader of their land. The Gileadites were in a bad situation and they discussed the matter and agreed to allow Jephthah to become their new leader.
The beauty of this passage shows us that it does not matter what side of the tracks you come from, there is hope for all of us. The ill repute of this man's mother was not going to hold him back. There may come a time when those that held your past against you will need you. Jephthah was not one to hold grudges, so he stepped up to the plate and allowed ...
