In every life there are turning points that determine the course and direction of our life. The college degree we choose and the person we marry are two of the most significant decisions we make. They change the course of our life, where we will live and what we will do with our life.

For 30 years Jesus lived in Nazareth with his father Joseph and his mother Mary. The time has come for him to reveal who he is and so he makes a decision to be baptized by John as many other people were also coming to be baptized.

Background John the Baptist was the first prophet to appear around Jerusalem in the past 400 years. His message was that of repentance (:2,6-8). He offered baptism to people upon their confession of sin as a symbol they were sincere and it would be seen in their actions.

Baptized - Gk. to dip, immerse, submerge or wash. Mark 7:4 used of washing cups, dishes and pots. In 200 BC the Greek physician Nicander used the word for immersing a vegetable into a solution of vinegar to make a pickle.

Since Jesus was without sin then why did he go to be baptized? John was leading a movement of people back to God through repentance of sin and Jesus wanted to identify himself with those who were acknowledging their sins and turning back to God.

To identify with someone is to take a stand with or for them. Hebrews 11:24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter. He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. It was predicted the Messiah would be treated as a sinner.
