James Lowell wrote a poem in the Boston Courier newspaper on December 11, 1845 protesting America's war with Mexico. Once to every man and nation, comes the moment to decide,?In the strife of truth with falsehood, for the good or evil side,?Some great cause, some great decision . . . And the choice goes by forever 'twixt that darkness and that light.

After three years of ministry, Jesus had now come to the time when he would give his life as a ransom for the sins of the world.

- He had been born in Bethlehem to die on Calvary.
- He had become a man so he could die as our substitute.
- He came as a suffering servant to suffer for our sins.

AFFECTIONS :36-38 Place :36 After Jesus had celebrated the Passover with his disciples in Jerusalem, he took them and they left the city. Jesus walked across the Kidron valley up the road on the Mount of Olives to the garden of Gethsemane (:30).

Gethsemane - Gk. oil press (only other time Mark 14:32). It was in a grove of olive trees where there was a stone press. In Bible times the olives were crushed between two large stones so the oil would be squeezed out to use for cooking, lighting lamps, body lotion, ointment, medicine and other uses.

This garden was on the western side of the Mount of Olives, a couple of miles from Jerusalem, and was high enough so that you could oversee the whole city below. It was here Jesus anticipated the crushing agony and physical suffering that he would soon experience at the hands of the religious leaders, Pilate and crucifixion at Calvary.
