Series: Life of Christ

Acts 1:9-11

Frances Havergal (d.1879) was an English poet and hymn writer. She is best known for her hymn; Take My Life and Let It Be, but also wrote: Like A River Glorious and I Gave My Life For Thee.

She wrote a hymn titled, Golden Harps Are Sounding in 1871. Golden harps are sounding, angels' voices sing, ?pearly gates are opened, opened for the King; ?Jesus, King of glory, Jesus, King of love, ?is gone up in triumph, to his throne above.

All his suffering ended, joyfully we sing, Jesus hath ascended! Glory to our King!

He who came to save us, he who bled and died, Now is crowned with glory at his Father's side, From the grave arisen, nevermore to die; Jesus, King of Glory, is gone up on high.

The Ascension of Jesus Christ is meaningful for several reasons: 1. It signaled the end of His earthly ministry. God the Father had lovingly sent His Son into the world at Bethlehem, and now the Son was returning to the Father.

2. It signified the success in His earthly work. All that He had come to do, He had now accomplished. On the cross as he was dying Jesus said, ''It is finished'' (John 19:30). ?3. It marked the return of His heavenly glory. Jesus' glory had been veiled during His sojourn on earth, with one brief exception at the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-9).

4. It symbolized His exaltation by the Father (Ephesians 1:20-23). The One with whom the Father is well pleased (Matthew 17:5).

5. It allowed Him to go and prepare a place for us (John14:2).

This dramatic event is described by Luke in detail as Jesus physically and visibly ascended into heaven in a cloud. CLOUD :9 Identity As Jesus was talking with his disciples about sharing the gospel throughout the world he was lifted up or raised up from the earth and went directly through the clouds back to heaven.

Lifted up (KJB taken up) - Gk. to raise up. It is often used of lifting up your eyes or looking up. Luke 6:20 J ...
