A LIFESTYLE PLEASING TO GOD
I THESSALONIANS 4: 1 - 7
(PAGE 1726 COME ALIVE BIBLE)
JESUS CHRIST is not primarily concerned with your happiness. He
knows that happiness is a by-product. Jesus is principally
concerned about your holiness. He knows happiness ia a
by-product of holiness. He knows you can't be happy until holy.
He desires for you the product and the by-product -- holiness
and happiness.
I Thess. 4:1 speaks of believers walking in such a way as "to
please God." The text then moves to speak of "commandments"
passed on by the writer from Jesus Christ. The term translated
"commandments" was a military one referring to orders passed on
from a commanding officer. Upon receipt of orders, a military
subordinate either obeys or is guilty of disobeying an order,
insubordination.
II Timothy 2: 4 says, "No one engaged in warfare entangles
himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him
who enlisted him as a soldier." Believers are engaged in
spiritual warfare. Christ is our commander and we are to obey
Him.
Having been told we are to obey orders, we had best read them
next. The order says: "This is the will of God for you..." Let
it be noted this is very clear and simple. There can be no
confusion that what follows is to be obeyed and that obedience
pleases God. If you want to please Him, obey this command.
The will of God is "your sanctification." This word has such a
twisted, modern day meaning we must go back to the Bible to see
what it meant and how it was used.
