Hebrews 13:4
Turn your bibles to Hebrews 13. It's very close to the end of the bible. Hebrews is a book called Hebrews because it was written to first century Jews. It's so packed Old Testament quotes and allusions because it presents proof to Jews that Jesus is not only the fulfillment of everything in OT but he is superior to the entire Jewish system.
Now the first 11 chapters are theology. They contain the author's reasoning for why Jesus is better- and chapters 12 and 13 are application. Based on what is true about Christ, THEREFORE we should live this way.
And so that is the backdrop of where we find our text this morning. And you'll find that it is incredibly relevant for today. So let's read it. It's only one verse Heb 13:4 and then I will pray as we consider how we honor marriage:
Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.
PRAY
As I begin I want to mention that the weight of this passage has had a considerable affect on me. I confess that it even brought me to the point of sinful anxiety and I have a wonderful wife who graciously helped to point that out to me and prayed with me.
Marriage, gender identity, and personal autonomy regarding sex are extremely sensitive subjects. And I recognize that many of you this morning come from very different backgrounds and opinions.
So it's my goal to take extreme care not to allow any biases to come through but to let only God's Word be apparent.
Because THAT's our authority. What is true is not determined by personal opinion, or popular culture, or political biases, or what's trending on Facebook.
The Fundamental premise where Christianity begins is that the Bible is the Sole authority. And we must allow the eternal truths of Scripture to determine our beliefs on everything.
I want to help you understand what God says about ...
