Children Obey Your Parents (1 of 2)
Series: Honor
Michael White
Ephesians 6:1-4
We're a few sermons into a series called honor. We've spoken about how we honor God, how we honor authority and government, this morning we speak on how we honor parents.
The passage is the first 4 verses of Ephesians 6. It's is very special to me because it begins with the first verse I memorized as a child. I think I was 4 years old and I still remember the little card it was written on. many of you know it as well: Children, obey your parents in the lord for this is right!
My parents had me repeat it so many times that I don't think I could ever forget it! I have my own children memorizing it right now because it tells us the primary responsibility and expectation of children: obedience.
Now the tricky part of speaking on parenting is that I am a very young parent (I have 3 kids, 3 and under) and I don't have it all figured out! And apparently one of my kids was the brattiest kids at the playdate this week because he poked another child in the eye at the park (This child will remain nameless though I will tell you he was the other pastor's kid!)
SO i'm speaking this morning not as some parenting guru who is going to impart to you wisdom from the deep resources of my own knowledge and techniques.
I'm allowing God's word to be the authority as we mine its truths and seek to understand it the best we can
And what l love about this passage is that it is so simple
So let's read the passage:
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 ''Honor your father and mother'' (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 ''that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.'' 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
