A few years ago I was working in a nice residential neighborhood in Los Angeles and I saw a runner jog by wearing the typical athletic type clothing that joggers wear and I didn't even take a second look.

He passes by again and takes a break and my coworkers talk to him. I just keep working.

Anyway afterwards they ask me did you know who that was?

I say who, that jogger?

They tell me it's Bill Nye the science guy.

I said what? Bill Ny from that nineties show? They say yeah bill Nye!

Of course I knew who Bill Nye was. He is a very famous man- a household name and a multimillionaire- but I hadn't the faintest idea that jogger was him- because he wasn't wearing the type of clothes you would expect him to wear.

You'd expect a millionaire to look like a millionaire but he looked liked your everyday jogger so I didn't take a second look.

What you wear typically tells us about who you are.

Walking around Wellsboro in the fall, it's not unusual for me to see guys wearing camo, which tells me they like to go hunting.

When I see someone in a military uniform, it tells me what that person does.

When I see someone wearing barn boots and blue jeans, i know what he does.

Your clothes send a message about who you are.

And So Paul uses the metaphor of clothing to tell us that we need to communicate Christ. There is something we communicate by what we put on.

A few verses earlier he tells us to take off certain clothing

Put to death earthy things, he says in v5 sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

Put off the old self- these old ragged garments which are of no value to you- put them to death.

In the same way that you would take off dirty filthy clothes after working outside, put off earthly things.
