This is War
Michael White
Ephesians 6:10-20
in 1521, there was a council called the Diet at Worms, where Martin Luther defended his writings and was declared a heretic by the Roman Catholic Church. Subsequently, the reformer immediately fled for his life and found himself hidden in a Castle called Wartberg. There he translated the entire New Testament into German in a mere three months.
And there is a legend that in the midst of his sacred work he faced severe temptation. So severe, in fact that he became so aware of the Devil's presence and so agitated that he allegedly threw an inkwell at the Devil himself. And to this day you can visit the castle and see a hundreds of years old ink stain on the wall. Apparently, this was a habit of Luther's since there are dramatic ink stains at most of the historical sites pertinent to Luther.
And I say this merely to illustrate that even in the midst of doing such a spiritually invigorating task, Luther faced some of the darkest challenges and temptations of his life
When you think you are having great victory over sin, when God is doing amazing things, even through you- these are the times when your spiritual battles will be the hottest.
In fact the very existence of spiritual warfare in your life can be proof that you are in the right place. When you are seeking to be pleasing to Christ and have mastered one sin, you are attacked by another. The devil uses different angles an different methods. It his express purpose to cause Christians to fail, to mar their testimonies, and undermine the Gospel by bringing reproach to the name of Christ.
The devil doesn't go after those who are completely given to their sin and selfishly absorbed in it. temptation fights the hardest against those who are victorious over it.
Because when we are at our best, the the devil is at his worst
If you were a believer in the City of Ephesus in the first century, you too would face severe spiritual battles.
