LOVE: A THREE-ACT DRAMA
LUKE 13: 34, 35

JESUS CHRIST played out His real life drama on an earthly stage.
He, the lead character, has left the set but the stage remains
and the drama goes on. Last Sunday I and a small group of
friends left our hotel on the summit of the Mount of Olives
early on the sunny morning and walked across a part of that
stage to reflect upon what happened there. These three settings
were all within a short walk of our hotel. Use your imagination
and let me reset the stage for you of three acts in His drama of
love.
I.ACT ONE: HIS ANGUISH - LUKE 13: 34
A small wooded garden on the slopes of the Mount of Olives is
our first stop. It marks the place from which Jesus had a
panoramic view of the Golden City of David and in anguish said:
"O JERUSALEM, JERUSALEM, THE ONE WHO KILLS THE PROPHETS AND
STONES THOSE WHO ARE SENT TO HER! HOW OFTEN I WANTED TO GATHER
YOUR CHILDREN TOGETHER, AS A HEN GATHERS HER BROOD UNDER HER
WINGS, BUT YOU WERE NOT WILLING" (LUKE 13: 34).
Pathos is found in His repeating the word Jerusalem.
There is an ancient Rabbinical statement: "Israel is the center
of the world, Jerusalem is the center of Israel, and the Temple
is the center of Jerusalem." In light of this Jesus was
speaking of the condition of the world and His love for all
persons.
His graphic description of what He desired to do for them is
pictorial of what He wants to do for us. Having been reared on
afarm with one of my childhood chores being to feed the chickens
this has always been one of my favorite descriptive passages.
