One of the logical fallacies you run across in courses on philosophy, logic and debate is the straw man fallacy. It seeks to create ambiguity surrounding an issue. Rather than dealing with your opponent's true position, you build an argument that resembles but does not accurately represent it and then you begin tearing it apart. Everyone thinks you are doing a masterful job deconstructing their argument/belief and embarrassing them when in truth you have not even touched the issue at hand but skirted around it. (Politicians are very good at this).

This is what the Judaizers had done in their ongoing debate with Paul over the nature of salvation and what part the law plays in the salvation process.
