I met Walter in 1992 at the Sav/Rex Drug store. We were part of the breakfast gang. We did not solve the world's problems. However, we probably created some.

We played many rounds of golf together. Sometimes we would go to different golf courses and play. One time several of us went to Hattiesburg to meet some of my Quitman friends. I think we had two teams consisting of four each. One of the golfers from Quitman asked Walter what he did. Walter told him. He said, ''What are you doing playing with the preacher?

When I got ready to trade my car for a Yukon in 2005, Walter came to the dealership and bought my car. He brought a grocery sack of 100-dollar bills and told the financial officer, ''I know they are good because I printed them this morning!''

After I left Pascagoula in 2007, we kept up with each other on the telephone. I went to his house a few weeks back when I was down here and paid him a brief visit.

I am not here to participate in this service because Walter was one of my church members. He was not. I am here because Walter was my friend.

I knew Walter as honest, humble, helpful, and had a sense of humor. We talked about the Lord on numerous occasions. In order to have friends one must appreciate that which is good and noble in another. Oftentimes, people only see the bad or what they don't like. I am glad Jesus was not like that. ''But God gave his love to us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for the ungodly.'' He prayed as he was on the cross, ''Father forgive them for they know not what they do.''

In our text today, Jesus was teaching the Jews that salvation had to come through him. They thought that since they were born in the nation of Israel, that they were privileged. By comparison, he shows how a centurion, a Gentile, a Roman soldier exhibited an exceeding faith. His request was answered because faith is the key that unlocks the kingdom.
