Jesus had been giving a series of lessons to help the Jewish people to realize that their salvation must come from him. They were depending on the fact that they were born in the right nation. By comparison, in our test tonight he shows how a centurion had an exceeding faith. His request was granted because faith is the key that unlocks the door of the kingdom.

This morning, I can understand how men can be amazed at God. There are many examples of that in scripture.

Matthew 8:27 ''But the men marveled, saying, what manner of man is this that even the winds and the waves obey him.''

Matthew 9:33 ''And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marveled, saying, it was never like this in Israel.''

Matthew 27:14 ''And he answered him never a word: insomuch that the governor marveled greatly.''

There are many other examples like when the apostles marveled that Jesus spoke to the woman at the well. I can understand men marveling at God. It is a little more difficult for me to think that God can marvel at anything.

It is amazing how we expect more from some people that others. Then it turns out that the one in which we expected the least turns out to be the best for the kingdom.

Harold E. Luccock told about a woman who died in London, famous as the best dressed woman in Europe. She left almost 1000 changes of clothes, but with those clothes she had worn the same unseeing eyes, the same deaf ears, the same enameled, painted face.'' Luccock compared her life to a man who died in the same city, with but one suit, blue with a red collar on the coat. He was William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army. He had but one costume, but he lived in a thousand lives.

So, our text says, Jesus marveled. I cannot imagine God marveling at anything. He has seen it all. He knew Pike's Peak when it was a pimple. He knew the Grand Canyon when it was a gully. He knew the leaning tower of ...
