Refocused Church
Steve Jones
Matthew 16:18
SERMON SUMMARY: At the start of the New Year it's time to REFOCUS on the mission of the Church. 1) From the Gospels we learn to FOCUS UP. 2) From the N.T. letters we learn to FOCUS IN. 3) And from the book of Acts we learn to FOCUS OUT.
INTRODUCTION: Shortly after the Hubble Space Telescope's launch in 1990, operators discovered that the observatory's primary mirror had an aberration that affected the clarity of the telescope's early images. Once Hubble began returning images that were less clear than expected, NASA undertook an investigation to diagnose the problem. Ultimately the problem was traced to mis-calibrated equipment during the mirror's manufacture. The result was a mirror with an aberration one-50th the thickness of a human hair, in the grinding of the mirror. Replacing the mirror was not practical, so the best solution was to build replacement instruments that fixed the flaw much the same way a pair of glasses correct the vision of a near-sighted person. The corrective optics and new instruments were built and installed on Hubble by spacewalking astronauts during a shuttle mission in 1993.
We want to start out this new year refocusing on the mission of the church. REFOCUSING is a good thing to do on regular basis. Revisiting what God's word says about the mission of the church is the only way to make sure we are staying focused. Do you know what our church's mission is?
In preparation for this message I re-read the gospels, the book of Acts and the N.T. letters with a view toward refocusing on God's vision for the church. To my way of thinking, the ''vision'' for this church can never be MY vision - it must be a Biblical vision. I wanted to look at what the Bible said with fresh eyes. I was surprised. Even though I have read the Bible through at least 30 times - I noticed some things I had never noticed before.
I'm going to suggest one major emphasis of focus from each genre of N ...
