Let's open our Bibles today to Matthew 1. Why is it 'the most wonderful time of the year' (as the song goes) loses its wonder for so many, including Christians? For a lot of people, it's become the most depressing, stressful, expensive, loneliest time of the year. It's usually because we're trying to extract the wonder of Christmas from the wrong people, places, or practices. For the world in general and kids in particular, the wonder of Christmas tends to be centered on the gifts we give and the presents we receive, right? And there is something wonderful, even magical about the right gift at the right time for the right person. We all have those exciting Christmas mornings etched in our memories when we opened the perfect present, right? I know I do. (pics)
- Evil Knievel stunt cycle (Also got pj's, bedspreads, pillow cases, curtains-Jackpot!)
- Rock'em Sock'em Robots (So while we weren't fighting, we could still be fighting.)
- BB guns (Mom and Dad constantly warned us about shooting our eye out. So, my brother and I had a rule we could only aim at each other from the waist down. Be safe or be sorry.)
- Atari Game Console 1 button, 1 joystick. Now my son says: ''Dad, just press R2, L1, left toggle up, right toggle in, at the same time push square, circle, then triangle in different series and sequences.'' My response is ''Son, when did you start speaking in tongues?'' Dads, do you feel my pain?
My parents were generous and gave us presents we wanted, but they were also practical and gave us things we needed. What is the most practical present universally known? Socks and Underwear, right? Those are staple items under many Christmas trees. It was almost a given my brother and I would get tube socks and tightie whities. I can hear my mom say, 'Bobby, go try them on. Let's see if they fit.' Mom, I'm 25! I got it! I assure you, long after my toys were bro ...
