Our kids always loved putting up the Christmas Tree. But we couldn't just put up the tree. There had to be Christmas music playing in the background, hot chocolate on the stove, and Christmas cookies baked in the oven. Only then could the tree go up.

But the pinnacle of the day, and the downer as well, was when Christie pulled the Tree Topper out of the box. You know what a Tree Topper is, don't you? It's the decorative ornament placed on top of the tree. Our Tree Topper is an angel - and all three of the girls wanted to be the one who put the Tree Topper up every Christmas! Can you say, ''cat fight?''

There's a website called Etsy (www.etsy.com) and you can purchase all kinds of traditional and non-traditional Tree Toppers: Elvis, the Grinch, or the President. There are antlers for all the hunters among us - and for the chefs, you can buy a fruit cake! If you like Disney you can get Tinkerbell, Snow White, or any of the seven dwarfs (isn't it politically incorrect to use that word?). If you're a Wizard of Oz fan there's the Wicked Witch (can you imagine walking into the pastor's house and seeing the Wicked Witch of the West as our Tree Topper?). Or if you prefer Stars Wars you can buy any of the characters, from Yoda to Darth Vader.

But the two top sellers are exactly what you'd expect: angels and stars. The angels announced the birth of Christ to the shepherds, and a star led the Wise Men to the house where Jesus lived. So, today I want to focus on one of those Tree Toppers.

Matthew 2 begins like this:

1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of King Herod, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem.
2 They said, ''Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and have come to worship him.''
