STICK TO IT

STICK-TO-IT-NESS
LUKE 9: 51 - 53

JESUS CHRIST desires to be your Master. He deserves to be your
Model. Don't try to model Him without letting Him master you.
As your Master, you become His disciple; that is, you sign up
for a life-long apprenticeship of learning from Him.
As your Model, you become His pilgrim determined to walk life's
path with Him.
One of my favorite non-words is STICK-TO-IT-NESS. Perhaps you
as I typified a lack of it as a child. Remember, you were going
to be a doctor one month, the next a jockey, soon a lawyer, then
a banker, then to settle on being a fireman. You just couldn't
stick to it.
The same was true of friends. "Best friends" changed as rapidly
as the seasons. This went on into courtship. One month there
was one and only one who was soon exchanged for the next one for
whom you would die. You couldn't stick to it -- or perhaps they
couldn't stick to you.
Unfortunately some people never outgrow this behavior. Others
who have overcome it as a habit lapse into it on occasion. Other
more respected works for stick-to-it-ness are patience and/or
perseverance. People who see things through to the end are rare
and admired.
Fredrich Nietzche wrote: "The essential thing 'in heavenand
earth' is...that there should be long obedience in the same
direction; there thereby results, and has always resulted in the
long run, something which has made life worth living."
A "long obedience in the same direction" is discouraged by the
world, the flesh, and the devil. As our Model, Christ revealed
