A Word Picture of Christ
Rex Yancey
Isaiah 9:6-7
How can anyone look at this passage of scripture without seeing Christmas words? These words were written at least 700 years before the birth of Christ. Isaiah dipped his pen in the ink-well of inspiration and gave us the gospel of the Old Testament.
''A child is born'' refers to the humanity of Christ. He was 100% human. ''Unto us a Son is given'' refers to his divinity. He was fully human without giving up the divine and fully divine without given up the human.
There are many names for God in the Bible. Each name adds information that helps us to understand something about the nature of God.
1. HIS NAME SHALL BE CALLED WONDERFUL.
1. Jesus was wonderful in his person.
Wonderful has to do with the miraculous. All the prophets were human in nature and less than perfect. We can see flaws in Moses, Elijah, and Elisha. But Jesus had no flaws, no weaknesses, and no sins.
He was both authoritative and compassionate. The common people heard him gladly. He was without sin. He was not snooty. He did not look down his nose at the down and outs or the up and outs. He was caring, considerate, and kind. Think of the best person you know with the best personality and that person would not come close to Jesus.
2. Jesus was wonderful in his preaching.
-John 7:46 ''The officers answered, never did a man speak the way this man speaks.'' I would love to have heard Jesus speak. I have heard some great orators in my day: Angel Martinez, W. A. Criswell, R. G. Lee, Adrian Rogers, Junior Hill and others. However, none of them would come close to the preacher Jesus was.
Paul was a great preacher. His words were weighty. He preached at midnight one time and a man fell from the loft and was killed. Paul prayed over him and brought him back to life. You need to hope that doesn't happen here. If it does when you are dead, you are just dead! Paul could not come close to the preacher Jesus was.
