SELF-EXAMINATION: PART II
I JOHN 2: 7 - 11
(PAGE 1775 COME ALIVE BIBLE)
"He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in
darkness until now" (Verse 9).
JESUS CHRIST said, "A new commandment I give to you, that you
love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love
one another" (John 13: 34, 35).
The Word of God challenges us to "Examine yourselves as to
whether you are in the faith. Prove yourselves" (II Cor. 13:5).
I John gives 5 tests that enable a person to prove they are "in
the faith", that is, that they are a Christian. The second
evidence is that we love our brothers.
It is absurd to say you love God the Father and live with hate
for your brothers and sister in Christ. He uses the Greek word
ADELPHON for "brethren," signifying fellow believers in Christ.
It is a word meaning coming from a common womb. Our source of
new birth is always and only the same, Jesus Christ.
Some years ago a friend who was an evangelist called me. Right
off he asked, "Nelson, what has Jesus done for your lately?" As
I stumbled through the inventory of things He had done to try to
verbalize one, he shot a second questions at me, "What have you
done for Jesus lately?" What have you done for Jesus lately?
That questions angered me because it indited me. Apply it to
yourself, "What have YOU done for Jesus lately?"
There is one thing I know I can always have as a ready answer. I
can consistently love my brothers and sisters inChrist. You can
hate me but I am going to love you. You can hold me in contempt
and speak of me derisively, but I am going to love you. Why?
