What we call book of Philippians is in fact letter from apostle Paul to church in city of Philippi. This church, Philippian church, founded by Paul himself. Paul arrived in city around AD 51, soon meets wealthy businessman named Lydia at Sabbath day worship gathering. Paul explains gospel to her and Bible tells us that “the Lord opened Lydia’s heart” to respond and believe in what Paul told her about Jesus.

She and her household become Christians and baptized. Her home will be where Philippian church first meets.

Paul though quickly finds himself in jail because he and his ministry partner, Silas, heal slave girl from evil spirit. Her masters making money off of her so of course not so happy that can’t make money of their slave anymore. They arrange have Paul and Silas beaten and thrown in prison. But prison not going stop Paul from talking to people about Jesus. He and Silas share gospel of Jesus with their jailer, and he ends up becoming Christian along with his family.

Paul soon forced leave Philippi. But left behind young and growing church. Kept close relationship with church. Personally came back and visited them at least two other times. Philippian church very supportive of Paul. Sent him financial support on several occasions. Even when church was struggling financially, still sent support.

Get a sense of closeness of their relationship in letter. Letter overall is warm, affectionate, familial. What prompted letter was Paul responding in thanks to Philippian church for another financial gift they had sent him. Paul in prison, probably in Rome, around AD 61. Their gift to him was definitely needed and appreciated.

So thankful for their efforts. But this not just thank you letter. Paul wants to take advantage of opportunity to encourage and strengthen their faith.
