I am 100% a comic book nerd. Although I prefer call myself as comic book afficiando. Or, as the French might, a comic book consisseur.
Grow up reading them, still love reading them. One of many series that I liked reading was Marvel Team Up. Two or more Marvel characters teaming up. Usually very different from each other. Might even fight each other when first met. But come together for bigger purpose, to be something and do something together could not do apart. That’s the power of heroes who team up together.
What this thing we call Roosevelt Community Church? Well, it’s us teaming up together, isn’t it? Now, we all very different, so this has to be something pretty big and important if going to team up. Easy for us all to do our own separate adventures, if you will. “Why do I need you to be the hero I already know I am?”
So what teams us up together? The biggest and important thing of all – the gospel of Jesus Christ. That’s what I want us to consider today – what it MEANS for us to team up together in the gospel, what WILL LOOK if truly teamed up together in the gospel. To help us do this, looking at Philippians 1:3-8.
Quick background to letter. Paul in prison in Rome. One of churches Paul helped start, the Philippian church, hears about this and so they send a member of their church, Epaphrodotis, to encourage Paul and also bring a financial gift to him. Side note: When people put in prison in 1st century, not normally given food and clothing by their captors; had rely on friends helping them. So Philippian church coming through for him in a major way.
Paul writes this letter, what we call today the book of Philippians, to thank them for this gift. And in doing this, you see that he sees this in a much bigger than just sending him a check.
1:3-5, I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, Whenever ...
