Introduction: For this past Christmas one of the presents Teresa and I bought Aiden was the classic game 'Connect Four.' Aiden and I had played it a couple of times in various situations and had both really enjoyed it and so while it may have not been the most glamorous and flashy of Christmas presents, or the one that got the biggest reaction from him, I'd argue it's the one that is getting the most use and attention. Part of what makes it fun to play with a six-year-old is teaching him how to look ahead in the game, how to plan his moves and to forecast the moves of his opponent.

Right, 'Connect Four' isn't just a game where you haphazardly throw in your pieces and hope to get a straight line. You have to plan and strategize. You have to see where you want to end up and start making moves and plays to get there. We know this is what makes great Chess players so great: their ability to see not just one or two steps ahead, but the truly great player can think up to 15-20 moves ahead. Moreover, they cannot only make their own plans but can continually pursue those plans regardless of their opponent's response. My point is that in any game of strategy your present actions are going to be shaped in light of where you're striving to end up. Knowing your end game shapes your immediate steps.

And this kind of planning, strategizing, and execution begins with the very first step. The very first move you make sets the tone; it sets you on a course. Knowing what is your destination, your goal, your final place, sets the trajectory for your first step. It just makes sense right. We do this all the time. When you are shooting a bow, you think about where your target is, the speed at which your arrow will fly, the effects that gravity will take on that arrow, weighing in factors like wind and resistance, you pick your angle of launch and you set that a ...
