Genesis 4:25-9:29
Introduction: Parents, how many times do you think you've said to your kids, 'You've got one more chance,'? It's something that Teresa and I have wrestled with a lot because on the one hand we really don't like the whole 'counting to three,' or giving another chance to our kids because we worry that it may undermine their obedience the first time we ask them to do something. Right? Like if they know they'll have another chance or if they know they've got three seconds, then they won't immediately obey.
Of course, at the same time there is such a thing called grace that, I guess, we should show our children. Right? I mean, I am constantly looking at my interaction with Aiden specifically and questioning whether or not I am raising a works-oriented young man. So, we try to give second chances in the Edwards household in hopes that the child will recognize the grace they've been given, they'll get their act together, and do better this second time around. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Certainly, it helps with the older the kids have gotten, but, still, it's never a given what they're going to do. So, we give another chance, warn the kids, and hope they'll make better choices.
It'd be easy to look at Genesis 5-9 in same light, with the events of the flood as being God giving humanity one more chance to do it right, hoping that they'll choose differently this time around. In Genesis 1 and 2 we saw God created the world according to His perfect purposes to glorify Him. He created man and woman to this end, gave them one another, gave them His very presence and blessing, and called them to be a part of His mission to fill the earth with His glory. In Genesis 3, however, we saw how the first man and woman rejected that purpose. They refused to dwell in the City of God and, in its place, humanity founded the City of Man. Cain, Adam ...
