Introduction: It's been widely acknowledged as of recent that public trust is at an all-time low, which has resulted in a feeling of chaos taking over our society. John Kerry, in an op-ed for the New York Times, argues that fear is overtaking the masses, writing, ''People sometimes choose the wrong path when they've lost confidence in the old answers. The frustration is real, and it's justified. ... It's little wonder that citizens everywhere are in revolt, for fear that they're being left behind while others are always racing ahead,'' (John Kerry, ''Saving our Future''). In a collaborative work for the journal Nature, economists and psychologists together observe that, ''Trust pervades human societies. Trust is indispensable in friendship, love, families and organizations, and plays a key role in economic exchange and politics. In the absence of trust among trading partners, market transactions break down. In the absence of trust in a country's institutions and leaders, political legitimacy breaks down,'' (Kosfield, Heinrichs, et. al.). Kenneth Barnes concludes, therefore, that we have lost faith in the fundamental institutions of our society because of, ''... a general perception that governments, businesses, and media outlets are fundamentally dishonest and self-serving ...,'' (Kenneth Barnes).
We have little trust in our government, in the bedrock institutions of American society, and even in one another. The only person you can really count on is yourself, and the only truth you can really trust is your own. How chaotic and scary such a world really is! No wonder our political rhetoric is so vicious and hateful. No wonder posts on social media are so slanderous and accusatory.
