Introduction: I think the parents among us this morning would agree with me when I say the most infuriating word to come out of your child's mouth must be the word, 'Why'. I imagine for some of you a chill may have just run down your spine, or for others your blood pressure just went up, your muscles grew tense, and a feeling of rage came over you just at the hearing of the word, 'Why'. I'm getting a little worked up myself just saying it and talking about it.

You ask your child to do something, you tell them to do something. It could be obvious like, 'Don't lay down in the middle of the road' or 'Don't hit your brother'; it doesn't matter what it is. Whatever you say to your child, their response is 'Why'. Now I get it, and I'm sure some of your smart folks who have studied child psychology or read lots of parenting books will tell me, 'Well Patrick, children are very curious and they go through stages of exploration as they are trying to better understand the world and themselves, and so don't get annoyed or mad at their questions, but embrace them!'

Right, I mean I get it that kids are curious, but at the same time that rebuttal they always give of 'why' it's disrespect. It is often the kid's way of saying, 'I don't think you know what you're talking about, Dad. So how about you share with me your line of reasoning and then I, in my infinite wisdom, will decide on whether or not complying with your wishes would be most in favor.' Right? The question of 'Why' is their way of saying, 'I like what I'm doing right now and I don't like what you are suggesting. So, leave me alone.' It's infuriating to deal with, as every parent or teacher or anyone who's ever been around kids knows. A child scrutinizing what you say, do, and think.
