Introduction: As many of you know, I'm a planner. Me and Hannibal Smith, I love it when a plan comes together. Plans are important, for without them we just wander through our days and our lives. Of course, James tells us to only make plans in light of the will of God as we are directed by His Spirit, but you know what I mean. You'll get little accomplished at work if you just show up and see what happens. You'll have a rather inefficient grocery trip if you just show up at Aldi and throw whatever suits your fancy in your cart. I mean you'd never get past that opening aisle of all sorts of junk you don't need but man you want it. Without a plan you'll go to Aldi needing to buy bread and milk for the kids and you'll go home with a queen bed mattress and three-piece luggage set. I mean, who cares that you have nothing to eat that night, you just got a pull-out sofa for $39.99!

Plans are important. They keep you focused and keep you moving toward that ultimate goal. They ensure that the smaller tasks of your life are purposeful, whether it's a shopping trip or we're talking about a five-year plan for your life and career. Again, of course as James warns us, as the Proverbs warn us, our plans can sometimes get in the way; our plans can close us off from hearing what God is doing around us; we can become slaves to our plans. But just because planning can be abused doesn't mean we shouldn't do it or its wrong. No, I believe, that having a plan and purpose is fundamental to our constitution as human beings.
