JESUS CHRIST's birth has given our society a season of
celebration which influences commerce, industry, education,m the
economy our social order, and religious life.
Our vocabulary is altered by it. Even annual grouches are heard
to sing in this season "Joy to the World." Year round Scrooges
ar heard to say, "Merry Christmas." Why not? "Tis the Season
to be Jolly! Is it really?
Christmas is a magic carpet that wraps itself about our hearts,
it is something intangible like a fragrance.
The Christmas season is a pencil sharpener of our emotions,
which becomes keener and more sensitive during the period.
Emotions are heightened and feelings deepened.
Emotions? Uh-oh, that is where problems come in. What
emotions? A variety of emotions flirt with our feelings during
the season. Truly for many people those sung of and spoken of
prevail. However, there is a common, often unspoken of, one
that lurks behind trees waiting for a victim, hides in wrapped
boxes waiting to spring out and grab us, and shadows us even
when amid bright twinkling lights. It is the emotion of
depression.
A study by the National Institute of Health reveals that
depression is a billion dollar a year business. More than 8
million Americans go to a doctor each year to be treated for
depression. Over 150,000 are hospitalized. "Newsweek" reported
that it is now in an epidemic stage.
