Update on Better Together
My family moved to Texas from the Chicago area in the middle 90s. I was a young teenager at the time and was less than enthusiastic about moving across country and leaving my friends - more importantly, my church youth group. My parents, my younger brother and I had visited several area churches in our first weeks here. We never found one that was a good ''fit''. We knew absolutely no one in Texas, so literally we were choosing out of the phonebook each Sunday. One week, we took off for a church and we got lost and couldn't find it. We pulled into a parking lot of a building that resembled a church, but only in that there was a cross on the building. There was a simple, non permanent sign that said ''Northwood Church''. I remember it, like it was yesterday. My dad turned off the engine and said, ''Well, we are all dressed up for church and nowhere to go. So let's give this a try. Now kids... I have no idea what kind of church we are about to walk into. Just remember what we believe and be polite.''
We soon discovered that we were in a Southern Baptist church in its baby stages. They had just finished their first permanent structure on the property and fellowship hall that they held services in... the worship center was still being built. The kids were in literal trailers brought onto the property. This became our church home in Texas. My family then went through some trying times. The church supported us and tried to help us. My father eventually left the church ... [and] my parents eventually divorced. I credit Northwood Church in helping me keep my faith through what could have been a spiritual breakdown at the time and with eventually helping me have a strong enough faith and conviction to learn to love my father, but stand up for what I believe in.
The whole point of me telling this story is that you never know who you will reac ...
